A stop-motion film animation technique, inspired by European silhouette cutting and shadow play, in which the subjects are cardboard cutouts, seen as black silhouettes against a lighter background when backlighted. For each frame, the position of one or more of the articulated subjects is altered incrementally, giving the illusion of continuous motion when the footage is played back at the standard 24 frames per second.
