Words, phrases, or passages of text marked in a book with a broad-tipped, brightly colored pen for future study. The presence of highlighting diminishes the value of a book for resale, particularly for collectors. As a general rule, donatedmaterials containing highlighting are added to a library collection only in exceptional cases. Highlighting can also be a form of defacement (see this example). Compare with underlining.Highlighting is also used in some computer applications to edittext by positioning the cursor at the beginning of a word, phrase, or entire passage, holding down the mouse button, and dragging the cursor to the end of the desired portion of text.
