Compress is (noun) a pad of cloth, sometimes soaked in hot or cold liquid, placed on the skin to relieve pain or to force pus out of an infected wound She applied a cold compress to the bruise. The nurse applied a dry compress to his bleeding knee. (NOTE: The plural is compresses.)(verb) to squeeze into a small space The garden centre sells peat compressed into large bags.
