ALLUSION

What is ALLUSION?

ALLUSION meaning in English terms is A passing reference in a text to a literary or historical person, place, event, or other literary work. For example, in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Walton writes in his second letter to his sister, Margaret, "…but I shall kill no albatross, therefore do not be alarmed for my safety…" This is an allusion to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a prominent literary work, in which a sailor suffers great misfortune at sea, including the loss of his entire crew, after killing a highly regarded bird.
